چکیده

In classical loss cone theory, stars are supplied to a central black hole via gravitational scattering onto low angular momentum orbits. Higher feeding rates are possible if the gravitational potential near the black hole is non-axisymmetric and the orbits are chaotic. Motivated by recently published, self-consistent models, we evaluate rates of stellar capture and disruption in triaxial nuclei. Rates are found to substantially exceed those in collisionally-resupplied loss cones, as long as an appreciable fraction of the orbits are centrophilic. The mass captured by a black hole after a given time in a steep (ρ ∼ r) nucleus scales as σ with σ the stellar velocity dispersion, and the accumulated mass in 10 yr is of the correct order to reproduce the M• − σ relation. Triaxiality can solve the “final parsec problem” of decaying black hole binaries by increasing the flux of stars into the binary’s loss cone.

Recent X–ray observations of intense high–speed outflows in quasars suggest that supercritical accretion on to the central black hole may have an important effect on a host galaxy. I revisit some ideas of Silk and Rees, and assume such flows occur in the final stages of building up the black hole mass. It is now possible to model explicitly the interaction between the outflow and the host galax...

The coalescence of massive black hole binaries is one of the main sources of low-frequency gravitational radiation that can be detected by LISA. When two galaxies containing massive black holes merge, a binary forms at the center of the new galaxy. We discuss the evolution of the binary after its separation decreases below one parsec. Whether or not stellar dynamical processes can drive the bla...

We have performed a first fully 3-D GRMHD simulation with Schwarzschild black hole with a free falling corona. The initial simulation results show that a jet is created as in the previous simulations using the axisymmetric geometry with the mirror symmetry at the equator. However, the time to generate the jet is longer than in the 2-D axisymmetric simulations. We expect that due to the addition...

We analyze a sample of 32 galaxies for which a dynamical estimate of the mass of the hot stellar component, M bulge , is available. For each of these galaxies, we calculate the mass of the central black hole, M • , using the tight empirical correlation between M • and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion. The frequency function N [log(M • /M bulge)] is reasonably well described as a Gaussian w...
